The Republican Party seems to be into this weird restore the constitution phase, as if it ever really went away. Suddenly everyone from Lindsay Graham to Rand Paul are constitutional scholars. From repealing the 14th Amendment, granting the right of citizenship to all people to repealing the 17th Amendment, which is the direct election of senators, suddenly the party of keeping America constitutionally sound wants to change everything.
Now this is not an uncommon trick for the GOP. Bush pissed all over the 4th Amendment with the Patriot Act and wanted to come up with a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Alas, these are forgotten facts. I hope that people are smart enough not to fall for this, but I could could be wrong.
To not appear partisan, which I think I already went over that bridge a long time ago, the Democrats use the tactic of interpreting constitutional freedoms, like the 2nd Amendment, for liberal social gain. The difference is that Democrats are not running on this platform of “Preserving America.”
