U.S. Debt

I am a bit tired today, but I decided to post one more sexy graph for you. It is the graph from the Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the official scorekeeper for Congress, about where the U.S. national debt is at the current moment. Deficit hawks love to tout that the debt is in the worse place since WWII. That is not quite accurate. Actually, while the debt level is high, as it should be during a recession, it is not high enough for alarm yet and will not be for quite a while. The CBO estimates it will not be that big of a problem until 2035. So you can sleep sound, for now!

World Affairs Charts to Ponder

I am going to be gone for most of the day, but I do not want to leave you without something to read, so here are some opinion polls that I find interesting:

China and U.S. Economic Balance of Power: Even though China just passed Japan as the second strongest economy, they have not budged very much in views of people around the world. On the other hand, it is growing and will continue to grow as China gets stronger – especially in Africa and Latin America

Obama’s Confidence Abroad: Despite not keeping many of his promises on foreign affairs and not being much of a foreign affairs president. More people abroad still have much more confidence in him, even more than Bush.

Views of Obama in Islamic Nations: There might be rumors floating around the U.S. that Obama is a closet Muslim, but in Muslim nations his confidence rating has fallen in most Islamic nations. That is probably coming from not fulfilling his promises in his Cairo speech from last year.

Top Domestic Issue: Alaska’s Election Surprise

Top Foreign Issue: Israel/Palestine Talks

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/world/2010-08/25/c_13462558.htm

Today’s Keyword/Theme: Surprise

Sarah Palin’s influence in Alaska might be greater than some commentators thought. Her candidate, Joe Miller, seems to be beating Lisa Murkowski 51-49%. This is happening after polls showed that Palin’s influence was limited. Meanwhile, Israel says that most likely an agreement with the Palestinians will not happen within one year. Not a total surprise, but the confidence level for going into the talks is not high. The U.S. must be more aggressive on this issue.
