Reflection: Remembering Successes

I posted several interesting success stories on the international front with the Millennium Challenge Development Goals. I find that we do not focus on our successes like we should. For example, the Democrats have passed a lot of legislation (financial reform, healthcare, crucial Iranian sanctions, getting the Israel/Palestine talks going again) none of which are a small feet.

Whether you are a fan of the Democratic party of not, I must give credit to their leadership for at least following through on many of their promises. Yes, DADT and immigration reform did not pass yesterday, but I prediction is that they will. I must give the Democrats their due credit for at least trying on this. There might be backlash, but I think the backlash would have been worse if they did not do anything. Think about it, if Obama came into office and said that we should just let the market work it out, people would still riot in the streets. The point is that nothing the Democrats do will ever make the people happy. You can never please people, anyone in the sales businesses will tell you that.

I need to cut it short tonight because I am going to see leading political scientist Larry Sabato. Here is the usual summary of my posts:

1. My theme was changing it up
2. Palestine might continue to talk without a settlement deal
3. The success stories of the MCDG
4. North Korea choose a leader soon
5. More MCDG stuff

Thanks for reading. See you tomorrow!

Millennium Challenge Money Given Out

The U.N. has just announced that they plan to increase money to the Millennium Challenge Fund. Reuters reports:

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will announce on Wednesday a $40 billion launch to a plan to save the lives of 16 million women and children over the next five years, U.N. officials said.

The drive aims to make headway on the slowest-moving sectors of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) set by the world body 10 years ago — maternal and child health.

It was announced on the final day of a U.N. summit designed to speed progress on all eight goals, which also seek to slash poverty and combat disease.

“It’s the first time we’ve seen across-the-board agreement on how we approach women’s and children’s health,” Robert Orr, a senior aide to Ban, told Reuters, adding that the plan would be endorsed by the 192 U.N. member states.

And the Leader Is?

Kim Jong ill plans to appoint his successor soon. The BBC reports:

North Korea’s ruling party will hold its first conference in a generation on 28 September, state media reports say, amid speculation that leader Kim Jong-il is about to name his successor.

The Workers Party is widely expected to promote Mr Kim’s third son, Kim Jong-un, to a senior position.

Observers believe a promotion would anoint him as the heir to his father, the self-styled Dear Leader

This is probably a good time for NK to do this because it helps for the world to refocus on how to reform NK for the future. Its current leader will probably not rebuild its economy and institute much needed government reforms, but he western educated son might.
