Top Domestic Issue: Remembering Hurricane Katrina

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-08-27-katrinaani27_ST_N.htm

Top Foreign Issue: Iraq

http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-503544_162-20014850-503544.html

Today’s Keyword/Theme: Regret and Unfulfilled Promises

Hurricane Katrina and Iraq are two issues that seem to linger in the minds of most Americans as two failed policies of the Bush administration. If only more had been done to help the poor souls in New Orleans. Another question could be asked: Was Iraq really worth the trouble? Has American learned its lesson from these two debacles. History can sometimes be our own worst enemy.

Top Domestic Issue: Alaska’s Election Surprise

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iXP5SqYD7mXezWparpit8qa6EsrwD9HQPS080

Top Foreign Issue: Israel/Palestine Talks

http://news.xinhuanet.com/english2010/world/2010-08/25/c_13462558.htm

Today’s Keyword/Theme: Surprise

Sarah Palin’s influence in Alaska might be greater than some commentators thought. Her candidate, Joe Miller, seems to be beating Lisa Murkowski 51-49%. This is happening after polls showed that Palin’s influence was limited. Meanwhile, Israel says that most likely an agreement with the Palestinians will not happen within one year. Not a total surprise, but the confidence level for going into the talks is not high. The U.S. must be more aggressive on this issue.

John Boehner would become the next Speaker of the House if the Republicans win a majority their. He believes, along with other Republicans, that they have a shot at being able to repeat the 1994 victory. Jimmy Carter is going to North Korea to try and free an American prisoner there and engage in some dialog. He is hoping to repeat the success of Bill Clinton when he freed two journalists from captivity last year. Repeating the past is what both strive for. Is is possible? We will soon find out.

Top Foreign Issue: Pakistan Floods

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE67N01220100824

Today’s Keyword/Theme: Setbacks

The recent ruling on stem cell research and the IMF discussion about the Pakistan economy after the floods show that setbacks are going to be made in both country’s agendas. The Obama administration is now faced with another social issue problem which will rally conservatives, but this time conservatives just won a battle. Pakistan must also make hard financial choices after the recent floods to help its fiscal situations. Both areas are now going to be in pain for a while.

Top Foreign Issue: Israel and Palestine

Today’s Keyword/Theme: Time to Build Bridges

The let’s hold hands moment is now. Right now, the Obama administration has got to work with many sides in order to solve these crucial problems. On the Ground Zero Mosque issue, the Obama must stand tall and not back down to dissent. Even though it is a local issue, he must help the coordinate an effort with the proponents of the mosque to talk with those who are against it. Internationally, the Israel Palestine talks are in good shape, but it will require some very technical work to make sure Hamas, Fatah, and Israel’s coalition government stay on board. Both of these issues will require indirect action from the administration, but they are all very crucial.
